Poynton 6, Inter Cheadle 3
Stockport Metro League Division One, Sunday April 27th
Inter yet again pushed Poynton all the way - and finished up with nothing.
For the third time this season in league and cup, Cheadle dominated large spells of the game against Poynton, grabbed themselves the lead, but failed to hold on to it.
The game was always going to be hazardous in a swirling wind and driving rain and it sparked into life within 30 seconds when Poynton took the lead after some confusion in the Inter defence.
Within minutes the game was level. Kay relinquished his brief spell in goal and capitalised on a weather-forced error by the Poynton 'keeper to make it 1-1.
Inter grew in confidence and put the home side under pressure but Poynton always looked quick and dangerous on the attack.
This proved the case ten minutes before the break when they regained the lead as they went in search of runners up spot to add to their Metro Cup triumph.
The second half started with Inter in determined mood playing down the slight slope. Kay was causing the Poynton defence all sorts of trouble and it was no surprise on 45 minutes when yet another of his foraging runs and crosses was turned over the line by the Poynton defender - under immense pressure from Josh.
Minutes later Inter took the lead, Tom started and finished a move that saw him finish well after beating the Poynton right back and blasting past the 'keeper from the edge of the six yard box.
Unfortunately the lead was short-lived as Poynton went straight up the other end and levelled with a dipping long range effort.
Inter remained dominant and confident in what was turning out to be one of their best performances of the season but they ran out of luck in the final third as they strived for a well-deserved winner.
As legs tired Poynton stepped up a gear and snatched a fourth with five minutes remaining. It had been on the cards after twice hitting the bar just seconds earlier.
Two more late goals gave the scoreline a very flattering look but Cheadle were able to hold their heads up high knowing they'd made Poynton work for their four points and cup final place this season.
