Inter Cheadle 7, New Mills 2
Metro Cup 2nd Round, January 27th 2008
Inter produced their best performance of the season to seal a Cup quarter final meeting with Delamere after this destruction of New Mills.
They got off to the perfect start when Josh met Liam's left wing cross first time to give Cheadle a first minute lead but it only lasted 10 minutes as New Mills took advantage of some dozy marking from a throw and struck the leveller.
Undeterred, the home side came straight back and retook the lead on 20 minutes with a fantastic 25 yard volley from John that gave the New Mills 'keeper no chance. Five minutes later it was three - and it was John again, heading home a right wing cross at the end of a great sweeping move.
A brilliant stop by the visiting 'keeper denied John his hat-trick to leave the half time score at 3-1.
Inter will have remembered that they too led 3-1 in the corresponding league fixture away to New Mills earlier in the season - and managed to come back and win so it was important that they started the second half strongly.
That was exactly what they did and it was another great strike that made it 4-2. New signing Max blasting a left foot volley from distance wide on the left hand side.
New Mills weren't giving up and made it 4-2 with another excellent strike from their speedy number two, but it was only a brief respite as Tom restored the three goal advantage with a neat strike from the edge of the box.
John finally secured a deserved hat-trick to make it six and Kay was rewarded for his tireless work on the wings with the seventh. But it wasn't just about goals, every player in the team put in a man-of-the-match performance with brilliant passing and support play.
The defence were as strong as ever with the Joe and Paul partnership once again proving virtually unbeatable and cool in their clearing of the lines. Dan put in another strong display of resolute defending and surging forward runs with great link-up play with Liam.
Dane and Flynn swapped roles with the latter putting in a stunning defensive display and Dane very solid between the sticks.
Brandon continued his excellent season with some intelligent play and Josh and John up front gave the New Mills defence a torrid time and there was a really eye-catching display from Feme who didn't waste a single ball and read the game superbly with neat passing and link up play between the midfield and forwards.
In all, the perfect preparation for the season run-in where we hope to see an upturn in fortunes, maybe a top half of the table finish and who knows - perhaps some more adventures in the cup...
