2008 Stockport Metro League Cup Semi Finals
Cheadle's cup adventure finally
came to an end against holders Poynton in a tense semi final
where the final score really didn't reflect the game.
Inter were fired up and ready
right from the first whistle and their early energy paid off
when they took the lead in the second minute.
Paul E cleared a Poynton attack
and Tom P picked the ball up on the edge of the Inter area.
He found Kaylem on the halfway line who turned and made a
great crossfield run, switching the play from right to left
and setting Liam off down the channel. Liam's pinpoint cross
found John S who gleefully shot home to give Cheadle the lead.
There were chances to increase
that lead but Poynton gradually edged their way into the game
and on fifteen minutes an unfortunate mix up at the back lead
to the equaliser after a spell of sustained pressure.
Cheadle's heads did not go
down and it looked like they were back in front on twenty
minutes as Max stroked the ball home with the Poynton 'keeper
stranded but to his dismay he found a defender appearing out
of nowhere to clear his goalbound effort off the line.
Five minutes later Poynton
took the lead with a neat finish from just inside the area
and within two minutes it was 3-1 with another well taken
goal and for the first time the tie seemed to be out of Cheadle's
grasp.
A injury to Tom R forced him
off and Inter were forced to reshuffle and try and limit the
damage before before the break but they managed to do even
better than that and on the stroke of half time a great throughball
from Josh sent the impressive Kay away to finish and make
it 3-2 at the interval and Cheadle were back in it.
With the slight slope in their
favour in the second half Inter took the game straight to
Poynton but were thwarted on their many attempts to equalise
in the first ten minutes after the restart by sturdy defending
and good goalkeeping.
Then the sucker punch came
when the Inter defence were unable to clear the danger and
Poynton slotted home to make it 4-2. With tiring legs on an
increasingly heavy pitch it was no surprise when the fifth
goal came for Poynton to seal their win but to Inter's credit
they never gave up and were still striving for a goal right
up to the final whistle.
It's been a great achievement
for the boys to reach the last four of a 45 team competition
just two years after winning the Fourth Division and they
should all be very proud of themselves.
There is a very good report of the same game on the Poynton website - click here to read this...
